Autumn in Arrowtown
As of late March, my family and I have lived in a rental cottage in Arrowtown, New Zealand, having arrived here the evening before the country’s COVID-19 lockdown began. We came to New Zealand from the US for a sabbatical with our one-year-old daughter, Rose, in late January, and we have watched from the South Island as the novel Coronavirus has infiltrated the world.
I have never before considered my photography to be a part of my art-making practice, but that feeling has changed since I have been capturing this town and its surrounding woods these past few months. I share these images here as a body of work.
Towards the beginning of the lockdown, we decided to end our sabbatical a bit early; I began caring for Rose full-time again as my husband returned to work remotely. Thus, these images were captured during naptimes and after bedtimes, and all are within walking distance of our cottage. I feel so fortunate to have spent the lockdown in this beautiful location and to have had the freedom to be outside, which has been our tonic in these turbulent times.
Photographs are displayed in reverse chronological order and are being added on a rolling basis. Dates are links to see image pages; or click through thumbnails in the carousels below each date.
